Making Doors and Arrowslits

Back to Scenery Page

To make some doors and arrowslits for your castle or building, you will need:

Wood works best for this because it is easier to cut and saw, but any other material of around the right thickness, such as corrugated card, would work.

First, draw onto the wood what shape and size you would like the surrounding of your door or arrowslit. For instance if you would like a arched door frame draw an arch onto the wood.

Then carefully around the outside edge. For this use a saw which can cut round corners, such as a coping saw or a jig saw.

A door is the easiest thing to make, because all you have to do at this stage is stick some masking tape, onto the wood where you want the door bit of the door. Then Paint and Texture it on the front and sides only. Alternatively you could saw the door shape out of your door frame, and then stick something, such as a thin piece of wood, to the back of the door frame. If you use wood do you not have to Paint and Texture it although you can if you really want to.

Arrowslits are a little bit more complicated than doors, simply because they look best if they have a depression in them which is painted black. You do not have to do this but I find it is the way to make them look the most realistic. Therefore you will have to drill or saw a hole in them somehow. I find that the easiest way to do this is by cutting a rectangular frame for them and then drilling a hole at either end. You will then be able to get your coping saw in to saw two straight lines, to the other hole. After you have finished drilling, and sawing it, stick a piece of thin card or paper over the gap on the back. You can then Paint and Texture this on the front and sides only. The card at the back of the hole you made can be painted black.
