Painting an Archer

Things you will need:

And the following paints.

Step 1

First of all paint the archers hands and face with a skin colour such as bronzed flesh. Water your paint down a little bit because if the paint is to thick it obscure the detail but if the paint is to thin it won't cover properly resulting in a dull model with white showing through. Don't worry about it too much though because you will get the hang of it eventually after you've painted a few more models. It also does not matter if you get paint on the other bits of the model that aren't fleshy because you can paint over it later. When you have finished wash your brush thoroughly in some clean water then dry your brush on a piece of kitchen paper (I find that slightly warm water works best).

Step 2

Now you need to paint the yellow paint onto the miniatures tunic. As we are painting one colour on one side of the tunic and a different colour on the other side (A halved pattern) there is no need to paint the whole tunic yellow. At the back of the tunic paint just over half way, you will see why later. Paint the yellow side legging and thing round his neck with the yellow too. Again it does not matter if you get yellow on the other parts as long as you don't get it on the fleshy areas.

Step 3

Let the Snakebite Leather dry and then paint the bow and arrows with a darker brown such as Bubonic Brown. Wait till the arrows have dried then paint the feathers black. Paint the other side of the tunic blue. Go slightly over the yellow at the back, that is the reason I told you to go over half way with the yellow because if you had painted to exactly half way you would need to exactly match it with the blue but now you can just pick a half way point and paint over the extra yellow paint.

Step 4

Wait for the yellow and flesh areas to dry and then paint Snakebite Leather onto the belt, pouch, shoes and any other leather bits on him.

Step 5

Paint the helmet, dagger, arrow tips and buttons with Chainmail (or any other silver paint). Be really careful while painting these things because the rest of the model is painted so it would mean going over the mistake and providing even more time to make another mistake.

Step 6

Dry brush the feathers on the arrows White.

Step 7

Finally, the models base needs painting. Paint it green being careful not to get paint on the shoes. Wash your brush thoroughly and dry it on some kitchen paper. Don't store it with the bristles pressing against something because otherwise next time you come to use it all the bristles will be splayed out so you won't be able to paint neatly with it.

To do the next steps you will need:

Blood Red paint, Chaos Black paint, Skull White paint, A paint brush and a fine black pen.

Step 8 (Optional)

You do not have to do this to have a good looking model but it does make it look better. Paint a dark red colour into the mouth cavity (Blood Red and a little bit of Chaos Black) and paint the eyes black. Wait till that is dry then pick out the teeth with white. Paint the eyes a very light gray ( Mix together white and a little bit of black ) leaving a thin line of black around the outside of the eye. If you think that looks all right leave it as it is but if you think it looks wrong then wait till the gray is dry then put a very, very small blob of black paint in the middle of the eye or use a very fine black pen.

Step 9 (Optional)

If you want to put more detail on to the base of your model see the article called: Adding Detail to Bases

Hint:
If you want to varnish your model use a spray varnish because it is easier and much quicker.
