Gates

The gate section is basically a wall section with a hole through it. A bretonnian castle would have an arched gate maybe even a pointed arch. The main thing to remember is to put battlements across the top so that it can be defended.

The inside of the gate passage is painted and textured in the same way as the rest of the gate although you may want to add cardboard blocks around the edge to give the impression or a keystone or resting pillars.

The final feature of the gate section is the gate itself. The gate can be made from a piece of balsa wood cut to shape or instead of gates you could have a drawbridge or portcullis to close the gateway. The drawbridge could be made from a flat piece of card or balsa wood hinged to the base and raised by hand or by strings pulled through the battlement above the gateway.

A portcullis is made from balsa wood or kebab sticks glued together in a grid and painted to look like iron. The grid would be raised and lowered with strings going up to the battlements. If you choose to have a portcullis then you will need to cut a groove in your wall for it to run in.

Gates can also be covered in metallic paints to give the impression of carved or studded metal. Hinging the gates or drawbridge is rather tricky although there are various ways to do it including just taping it to the passageway or using paperclips.
