How to Make Roofs for Your Buildings
Things You Will Need to Make a Pitched roof
Things You Will Need to Make a Conical Roof
Step 1 (Pitched)
Draw a rectangle onto the card, a little smaller than the size you want the roof to be. Cut this out and fold it in half.
Step 1 (Conical)
Draw a circle which is bigger than the diameter of the tower, onto the card, and cut it out. Then cut a straight line into the center of the circle. Make the circle into a cone shape. If it is way to small or way to big change the steepness of the cone, if it still doesn't look right or is the wrong size try again with a different size circle.
Step 2 (Pitched)
Cut some strips out of the remaining cardboard. Then chop the strips into little cardboard tiles.
Step 2 (Conical)
Glue the cardboard together where the edges of the straight cut overlap and sellotape it on the inside of the cone. While the glue is drying cut some strips out of the remaining cardboard. Then chop the strips into little cardboard tiles.
Step 3
Glue a strip of tiles along the bottom edge/s hiding the original edge. It does not matter if your tiles are a bit lopsided because it will just add to the effect. When the glue is dry add another strip overlapping the previous row keep going until there is about half a centimeter left at the top.
Step 4 (Pitched)
Make some ridge tiles by cutting a strip of card that, when folded in half, will cover up the top edge of the top row of tiles. Cut them up into little ridge tiles and glue them along the top of the roof. Don't overlap these just stick them next to each other.
Step 4 (Conical)
make another little cone
and stick it onto the point of the cone. If you want you can sand the match
stick down to a point a stick that on top of the little cone. I made a hole
in the top of both cones, stuck the match through and glued it with some hot
glue. Super glue will also work.
Painting It
Step 1
Decide what colour you want the tiles to be. I paint my roofs a blue-gray colour which looks like slate but you can paint your roof whatever colour you like. Some other common colours include: orangey-reds, grays and light browns.
Step 2
Undercoat the whole thing black or a dark shade of the colour your roof will finally be.
Step 3
Wait till the paint is dry then paint a lighter shade of this colour on top using only downward strokes.
Step 4
Gently paint the final colour on top of that using only downward strokes.
Step 5 (Conical Only)
Paint the bit on top a dull silver or metallic gray to simulate lead.
Final Step
Glue or place the roof onto the building.
